Helen Childs

Premmie Hero Volunteer Awards Nominee

Helen has sewed hundreds of tiny premmie gowns, muslin wraps & burial gowns and knitted & crocheted hundreds of little beanies for babies in NICUs and SCNs across Australia. Her goal is to send a care package to each and every hospital around the country. To date, Helen has donated up to nineteen ‘care packages’ to ten hospitals so far with each containing premmie gowns, wraps, beanies and sometimes precious heart keepsakes and burial gowns. Often many private care packages go to individuals who have contacted her or that she has heard about through social media sites or in her local hospital. Helen not only contributes her time towards each project, but she self funds all the sewing, knitting and materials to make each item and covers the full postage costs to ensure that each package is received safely, she also enlists people who are going away to take a care package with them to save on postage and hand deliver it to the Hospital.

Helen’s latest project is “nests”, which prem babies are swaddled in while in their incubators; the nests mimic the womb and provide firm support around baby. Each nest that Helen creates, keep each baby tightly snuggled and helps to recreate that feeling of security whilst in the womb.

In her spare time, Helen supports local mums in South Australia by attending a support group for families and carers who have experienced the birth of a premature or sick newborn. She has also held two online auctions where she raised $430 through selling handmade clothes and other handmade items to raise funds for Miracle Babies Foundation, the charity which hosts the local ‘NurtureGroup’ that she attends.

Helen inspires many through her generosity and kindness for our tiniest of battlers and continues to make a difference each day. She is admired by many and is a valued treasure throughout the premmie community.
