L’il Aussie Prems Foundation has proudly partnered with Ronald McDonald House Monash and together, we have launched the L’il Hands Accommodation Support program, a joint initiative in September 2014.
Over the past financial year, 78 families caring for their child in NICU or Special Care at Monash Children’s Hospital Clayton, needed to travel 100 kilometres or more from home. Ronald McDonald House Monash became their home-away-from-home for a total of 1175 nights.
Over the past 2 years through our partnership program, our Foundation has contributed a total of $6,500 to help ensure that together with the support of the RMHM community, that the cost per night to stay at the House is subsidised for these families.
Each year, over 45,000 babies in Australia require the help of a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or Special Care Nursery (SCN) with each baby requiring around the clock care. Thousands of these families often live hundreds of kilometers away from the hospital where their baby is receiving critical care and must seek emergency accommodation to stay close to their baby.
Parents are often separated from their loved ones or each other whilst their newest family member receives lifesaving treatment in hospital. They are placed under immense emotional, physical and financial stress during the many months that their baby will stay in hospital. The L’il Hands Accommodation Support program is designed to provide direct benevolent relief towards accommodation expenses for these families being faced with living away from home with a premature or sick newborn admitted into neonatal care at Monash Children’s Hospital in Clayton.
Ronald McDonald House Monash is attached to Monash Children’s Hospital Clayton and provides a ‘home-away-from-home’ for seriously ill children and their families. The House accommodates up to 6,000 families per year and a large percentage of their residents are parents who have a premature baby being cared for in the hospital’s Newborn Care unit who become familiar faces around the House for months and in some cases, years.
L’il Aussie Prems Foundation has been offering support to families with prematurely born children and sick newborns throughout Australia for the past ten years. The program continues to be funded from the generous fundraising efforts of participants in the annual The Age Run Melbourne event each July. The funds raised, continue to enable our charity to contribute $100 per month towards the cost of accommodating families with premature or sick newborn requiring emergency accommodation at the House. The program is soon to start incorporating emergency essential pack for families.
Both charities are passionate about the partnership and the program is a wonderful initiative of two organisations working side by side to help provide direct relief to the many families living away from home after the early arrival of their newest family member.
We are proud of our program and partnership and very grateful to the 2014, 2015 and 2016 Run Melbourne teams, and the many family and friends who donated towards their incredible efforts. You have helped us to make this difference in the community.
