Practical tips and information for premmie families

Put together an expressing kit to take with you wherever you go. Include sterile bottles/containers/jars, shields, valves and tubing for pump, baby’s hospital labels and a pen. This can all be kept in a cooler/insulated bag, ready for use. Don’t forget to take your electric or hand pump with you if you are going to need it.

Ask the nurses to take foot and hand prints if baby is stable enough to do so. When baby is stable enough, it is a great idea to have hand and foot casts/impressions made. You will be surprised at how fast they will grow!

Start a journal/diary about your baby’s NICU/SCN journey. You can include information daily about baby’s condition, medications, weight, and other circumstances and events such as coming off a ventilator, graduating to a hot cot, operations needed, first bath, first breastfeed or suck feed, etc.

NICU Terms and Equipment

Cardio respiratory Monitor
This measures a babies breathing and heart rate. 3 self adhesive disks with leads attached are placed on baby’s chest to read babies respiratory and heart rate. These readings can be viewed on a screen or monitor and if either measurement read above or below an acceptable limit, an alarm sounds to alert medical staff.

CPAP – Continuous Positive Airway Pressure
A continuous amount of air, sometimes with added oxygen, is delivered through tubes in the baby’s nose to keep the airways of the lungs open as baby breathes.

Incubator/Humidicrib/Isolette
This is a special bed where your baby may be kept. Premature babies lack the ability to maintain their body temperature so keeping them in this special enclosed bed keeps them warm until they gain some fat and the ability to hold their own body temperature.

Intravenous Fluid, Lines and Pump
Your baby may require intravenous medication, fluid or feeding. In this case lines are inserted into a vein or artery in baby’s leg, arm, scalp or what remains of the umbilical cord. A special pump regulates the amount of medication or fluid your baby receives.

Loki Birth Story ~ Born at 35 weeks

Labour was a tough one as I've always wanted a natural birth without any pain medication. I handled the contractions quite well, until I was in transition (9-10 cm dilated) where it got extremely painful and exhausting, but I kept going and refused any pain relief. At that time our baby's heart rate was dropping and wouldn't go back up, so I had to have an episiotomy and they ended up delivering him with forceps. They had to give him some oxygen for 30 seconds or so, but then he was breathing fine on his own. He weighed 2.505kg, 46 cm long, Apgar scores 9/9. I was very surprised, and relieved, of his weight and size as I never thought he'd weigh that much (I had a smaller than average bump throughout the whole pregnancy).

Bailey’s Birth Story ~ Born at 26 weeks gestation

Days turned into weeks and at 26 weeks pregnant I felt this overwhelming instinct that he needed to be out here sooner rather then later. The next morning I woke up with what I thought was wind pains, but I was in labour. After 13 hours of a hard and painful labour the baby's heart rate dropped so low that I had to be rushed in for an emergency cesarean where my teeny little man Bailey Arthur (Arthur after my Grandad) was born weighing a measly 702 grams and 29cm long. The doctors worked on him for a while and then I heard the best thing I had ever heard in my life, he was stable. He was taken to the NICU and I was taken to recovery. I didn't get to see him until the next morning but when I did I couldn't control my emotions, the happiness, sadness, confusion, shock, and love I felt were indescribable. His lungs were great, so much better than expected and he was flailing his little limbs around like a mad man. They weren't stiff or deformed at all. At 2 days old it was discovered that Bailey had a twisted bowel and he was operated on that afternoon. He was a true champion and came through the surgery like nothing happened! They found scar tissue on the bowel which means it happened in utero, they said that if he were in my tummy for much longer it could have been a very bad ending, he could have died.
