Compound Cuts Cerebral Palsy In Very Premature Babies

New York — New research suggests that doctors can cut the risk of cerebral palsy in half for very premature babies by giving their mothers magnesium sulfate just before they give birth.

In the government-funded study, researchers gave an infusion of magnesium sulfate to women about to give birth to a premature baby to see if it would reduce the risk of cerebral palsy.

More than 2,200 hundred women who were 24 to 31 weeks pregnant were enrolled in the study. Infants born before 37 weeks are considered premature.

Premature Baby ~ Award Article

I have attached one of the articles from todays local paper (Knox Leader). It explains about my Local Hero award and also about the work i have been doing to help parents and families of premature babies. The article also mentions about Lifes Little Treaures and the National Premmie Foundation who consist of many many mothers like myself who are trying to raise the profile & support of premature birth within not only our communities but also throughout Australia.

There are a few small errors in the article ie: Ronan was actually born 13 weeks early but it was very well written and the photo is just amazing. Thank you to everyone at the Knox Leader for such a great article and helping to raise the profile of premature babies within the Knox community.

Premature Baby Twins – Born At 22weeks

I have been speaking with a very proud father of premature twins who were born at 22 weeks & 2 days gestation in 1997. Reading the story of Amy & Sophie was just amazing and just reading what their father wrote brought tears to my eyes. It is a journey of 2 premature baby twins and the struggles Amy faced in the beginning of her life. Her twin sister Sophie passed away but Sophie’s strength lives on in her sister Amy.

An amazing story of how medical science has evolved over the years and saved the life of such a beautiful premature baby.

An Award For A Premature Baby Parent

You may remember me writing that I was nominated for “Volunteer of the Year” with my local council a few months ago. Well the award ceremony was held on Australia day and after having a lovely breakfast it was time topremature baby, award, australia, community, babies, premature babies, birth, labour announce the award. They went through each nominee’s achievements and the other nominee’s were all amazing and inspiring people. The work i have been doing within the “premature baby community” for the National Premmie Foundation, Lifes Little Treasures & PIPA by creating their websites was mentioned in the Counsellors speech as well as L’il Aussie Prems and about the Premmie Day event I helped organise last year in Wantirna. The first award winner was to be announced and the winner was me!

I won the “Local Hero of the Year Award”, I could have fallen over. I met the Mayor of Knox, media, counsellors and many families. The 4 winners had photos taken for the local newspaper this week so I will post them up when I receive them. My husband Mark was very proud as were my parents who had tears in their eyes.

premature babies, certificate, community, knox, babies, support, birth, pretermAfter the ceremony I spoke to quite a few women commenting that back in 1955 they had a premature baby or how their son/niece/nephew had had a premature baby. The more people i meet the more i am amazed that there are so many ex premature babies in Australia. Premature babies have always been around but until the past few years it does not seem like prematurity was talked about very much.

I am very happy and grateful to have won this award because the world of a premature baby is finally starting to be noticed. Many people have been working hard over the years trying to bring forth information and support to families of premature babies and i feel proud to know that i am also helping this to be achieved by doing everything that i do.

I hope you had a great Australia Day!

Bonnie Babes ~ Pride Of The Nation

Well Ronan and i were photographed yesterday for an article that is coming out most likely next week in the local paper on behalf of Bonnie Babes and their “Pride of the Nation” project. The photographer was here for about 30 minutes and we took many different angles of poses. Ronan had a blast and we even got him to manage a smile in quite a fepremature baby, premmie, baby, bonnie babes, parenting, labour, birthw of the photos!

I had a phone interview with the editor asking questions like; What was your experience of having a premature baby, what delays do premature babies have, what do they do to help the delays, did having a premature baby change your life etc..
