Premmie Babies Name: Jack Thomas
Gestation Born: 34wks
Weight When Born: 2280gm
Length When Born: 47.5cm
Current Age: 19mths
Current Weight Now: 11kg
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: Jack has just started walking, much to our joy! He has been seeing a physio to monitor his gross motor skills, but that should cease shortly. Other than that he has had no health issues at all. He is definitely growing at a faster rate than his older sister, (Eleanor, 27wks 6days), we can see him being taller and bigger than her in no time with his appetite!

Advice From Parents: Being our second prem, we had a little insight into what we were in for, but every baby is different. We went into this with the same positive determination we held with our first. Having a toddler being separated from Mummy most of the time was very hard, we tried to include her in everything, make sure she was a part of the whole journey whenever possible. Goodbyes were always the hardest thing, leaving our little tiny babe behind every night, but we always tried to say goodbye with a smile. The little ones are less likely to be very upset if you have a smile, they know that all must be ok, I know you love me, you aren’t really sad so I will try not to be. We still apply that to everyday.

Premature Babies Name: Charlotte Lilly
Gestation Born: 34 weeks
Weight When Born: 1987 grams
Length When Born: 42 cm
Current Age: 5 months
Current Weight Now: 5650 grams
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: Charlotte was a baby that was diagnosed with gastroschis, meaning her bowles were on the outside of her body at birth. After repair at 4 hours old, the routine cranial (head/brain) ultrasound was done. It showed an abnormality, we went for an MRI and that showed Charlotte had brain damage, most likely from a stroke before birth. Charlotte today still does not feed normally (is fed via PEG), has no hearing, has milestone issues and motor skills issues, but none of those issues change the love we have for her. She has overcome so much at the beginning of her life and we are very proud of her!!!

Advice From Parents: Stand up for yourself in the hospital, your are the childs mother and have a right to be as involved as possible with your child. Also try and chat with other parents, i made some of the most wonderful friends up there that are going through similar circumstances, they will be treasured for life!!!

Premature Babies Name: Holly Louise
Gestation Born: 34 weeks
Weight When Born: 2430gms
Length When Born: 48cm
Current Age: 26 months
Current Weight Now: 12kgs
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: We were very lucky, our early arrival had no major health issues, she spent 24 hours in the humidicrib and then 12 days of being gavaage fed before she started breast feeding. She came home 2 weeks after being born. She has reached milestone development points at the same rate as other babies born full term but didn’t catch up on the height and weight until she was about 18 months old. At 12 months she was diagnosed with a congenital bladder abnormality called Epispadias which will need to be corrected with surgery around 4 or 5 years of age. She will suffer from some incontinence until that time (nothing that pull ups can’t deal with).

Advice From Parents: Stay as positive as possible and make sure you have lots of friend / family support around you for the hard days.

Weight When Born: 7lb 1oz
Length When Born: 47.5cm
Current Age: 21 weeks
Current Weight Now: 7kgs
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: Sophie nearly came at 27 and again at 33 weeks. She had difficulty breathing at birth and spent a short time in special care with feeding issues and jaundice – there was also talk of a dislocated hip.

We had trouble with development of neck and head control- but its comming good now. There are minor concerns with Sophies hip, hearing and she doesnt like to use her left arm to lean on or pulled about. etc

Advice From Parents: Trust in your own instincts if you have concerns and push for action if you feel it is necessary with doctors and nurses. Give your bubs all your love, but remember that you need to care for yourself so that u can give them every bit of your love.

Premature Babies Name: Luke
Gestation Born: 34 weeks
Weight When Born: 1810 grams
Length When Born: 44.5cm
Current Age: 11 weeks
Current Weight Now: 2.27kg
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: My water broke at 32 weeks but labour was stopped and i made it to aq day before 34 weeks. labour was almost 10hrs and because of the epidural only working down my left side i still felt full force on the right. i managed to fracture my tail bone during the labour. Luke was born at 12:57am after an hour of pushin, he let out a good cry and then was quickly wisked away, i had to wait 9hrs for the epi to wear off before i could go to special care to see him. he didnt need any ventilation and apart from spending 48hrs under light therapy he has done pretty well. right now he is having trouble with his neck strength but we are working on it he will also need testing done for his eyes as they roll to the right a lot. we are working with getting him to starting making babbling noises too. he has began to smile this past week too which is awesome. he may be slightly behind his peers but hes doing so well.

Advice From Parents: Be strong for you baby, talk to your baby often about anything, read stories etc. Bonding is very hard when you have a prem as you cant hold them when you want to. Hold their hand and tell them your here and you love them.

Premature Babies Name: Saxon Brodie
Gestation Born: 34 weeks
Weight When Born: 5 pound 9 ounces
Length When Born:
Current Age: 9.5 months
Current Weight Now: 6.9kg
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: Born with a very rare skin condition ( collodion baby syndrome) which requires daily creams and a severe case of pulmonary stenosis. Underwent heart surgery at 4.5 weeks old to correct this. Loves his food but majority engery consumed goes to reproducing skin rather than gaining weight making him quite small for his age. Has not really reached any milestones but doctors aren’t worried, he’s getting there in his own time.

Advice From Parents: Make sure you continue to be pushy for answers, I found doctors left a lot out of you didn’t ask the questions.

Premmies Name: Lachlan Mitchell
Gestation Born: 34 + 2 weeks
Weight When Born: 2330 grams
Length When Born: 51cms
Current Age: 3 years old
Current Weight Now: 12kgs
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: Lachlan was born after my waters being broken for 5 days. I had Group B strep so was given antibiotics constantly. He was in a humidicrib for 3 days to have oxygen, phototherapy & course of antibiotics for Group B strep. He started feeding at about 1 week old. He took to breastfeeding very easily & stacked on the weight. He came home at 2 weeks & 2 days. 4 days after coming home all of a sudden things went bad. He stopped feeding, developed a very high temp & started having trouble breathing. Long story short but rushed him to hospital & found out he had developed a blood infection of E-Coli septcemia which nearly took his life. He spent time in PICU fighting for his life. Found out he got the infection from the Group B strep as he was treated properly. Came home properly 6 weeks later. Other than that he has had no ongoing issues. He is a happy beautiful little monkey who like all boys gets into everything.

Advice From Parents: Follow your gut instinct, a mothers instinct is always right. If you feel something is wrong or uncomfortable about what is happening then stand up for yourself & your bub. They need you & mum always knows her bub better than any doctor.
