Premmie Babies Name: Kai
Gestation Born: 32 weeks
Weight When Born: 959 grams
Length When Born: 34cm
Current Age: 26 months
Current Weight Now: 11kg
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: Kai is now a healthy 26 month old who has excellent speech and is developing well. His issues have been fairly severe inluding split bowels, hernia operations, nasty viruses and issues such as whooping cough, croup and asthma. Most of his issues are sorted and it is mainly management of his asthma and chest as well as his allergies to dairy and soy.

Advice From Parents: It is not easy but it is worth every struggle. You will have ups and downs and many frustrations but the pain will be outweighed by the beautiful boy or girl you have who has struggled so hard to be with you. When times are tough spend a minute looking at your bub or holding your bub and you will know it was worth it. Also get as much support around you as you can. This includes family, friends and LAP.

Premmie Babies Name: Hayden
Gestation Born: 32+3 weeks
Weight When Born: 2166 grams
Length When Born:
Current Age: 2yrs 10mths
Current Weight Now: 12kg
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: Hayden has done really well – he did all his milestones at around the same times (if not sooner) than his full term big borther and sister. He had mild weight issues at around 4-12 mths, but that was sorted and hes now just like any other 2yr old – infact hes probably a little too smart for his own good at times! 🙂

Advice From Parents: Ask for help – if you are not coping, finding things difficult to deal with tell someone, there are people that can help you and make the whole prem roller coaster sooooooo much more tolerable!

Premmie Babies Name: Charlotte
Gestation Born: 32 weeks
Weight When Born: 1.650kg
Length When Born: 40cm
Current Age: Nearly 4
Current Weight Now: 15kg
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: Charlotte was a fantastic baby. After spending 6 weeks in hospital she came home without any health concerns. We had one episode of apnoea at 4 months, but fortunately had an alarm which saved her life. She achieved her developmental milestones in line with her corrected age, though was slow in her speech.

At 18 months she developed asthma, and has been hospitalised twice with it. We have been told that it is nothing to do with her prematurity as she didn’t have chronic lung disease. Now – she is a regular chatterbox, who loves sport and doing anything active. Her asthma is still a concern, and we dread winter and all the viruses that can trigger bad attacks. But over summer you wouldn’t know she had a problem.

Advice From Parents: Make sure you have some time for yourselves. Take advantage of the ‘free babysitting service’ and have some quality time with your partner/family whilst you can. Because once you bring your gorgeous child home with you, they will take over your life (in a beautiful way)!

Premmie Babies Name: Harrison
Gestation Born: 32+4 weeks
Weight When Born: 2590 grams
Length When Born: 47 cm
Current Age: 8 months
Current Weight Now: 10 kgs
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: While in the NIC unit he got Necrotising Enterocolitis a fatal gut infection. It was so severe that he had to be transferred to a childrens hospital just in case he needed an operation. Luckily he didn’t need one. He has had no complications whatsoever since leaving the NIC unit.

Advice From Parents: Use all of the support systems that are available to you. The doctors, nurses, specialists and other parents are so resourceful and supportive. We always got honest answers in the NIC unit even though sometimes it was extremely hard to hear. Keep a diary or document your babys development while your baby is in NICU as it makes you appreciate even more just how amazing and super special you bundle of joy is!

Premmie Babies Name: Aiden
Gestation Born: 32+6 weeks
Weight When Born: 1.6kg
Length When Born: 41.5cm
Current Age: 4 months 5 days
Current Weight Now: 5kg
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: Aiden is really healthy. He required very little assistance after birth as I was admitted to hospital with placenta previa a week before he was born and given steriods at that stage. He was on CPAP for 2 days at birth whilst in NICU and moved to the SCN within 3 days of birth. He was on IV for a week and spent just under a month in the SCN. He was released from the Mercy Hospital 3 weeks before his due date and has thrived ever since.

Advice From Parents: Talking to everyone you can in the NICU or SCN helps a lot to know you are not alone. Breastfeeding was my biggest challenge and it took us almost 3 months to get it. Whilst it was a challenge it was well worth persevering as he is now fully breast fed. Don’t have too high expectations for feeding as Aiden was just too little to attach properly at first. It took a lot of feeding with formula and expressed milk to fatten him up so he could attach properly, whilst it caused me great stress it was worth it. However if you are just not enjoying it and its at the sake of your relationship with your bundle of joy then bottle EBM or formula is not going to hurt them.

Premmie Babies Name: Harper & Cleo

Have reached all devleopmentsl milestones and now run giggle eat and play like any adorable 2yr olds…with an extra touch of cheeky stubbornness I think many premmies have!

Advice From Parents: Knowledge is power. Remember statistics are only that…and they are always changing – because our babies change them. Take loads of photos and still record all your “firsts” like first bath, first spew on daddy etc….

James is now a very, very active 2 year old (he has already had a broken leg). His developement is advanced for his age, he was smiling at 4 weeks, before we left hospital. We consider ourselves very lucky.

Premature Babies Name: Taj
Gestation Born: 32 weeks
Weight When Born: 1496 grams
Length When Born: 46 cm
Current Age: 7 months
Current Weight Now: 6.5 kg
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: We thank God every day that Taj is now a very happy and healthy baby. When he was born, his apgar scores were 8 and then 9 and was only in IC at the Royal Women’s Melbourne over night before being kept in Special Care with the view to being transferred almost immediately to a SCBU closer to our home town. Unfortunately he started to have a lot of feeding problems (not tolerating his feeds) and also having very frequent A’s and B’s. The doctors did everything they could to figure out what was going on but couldn’t quite pin point it, it was very much one step forward, two steps back.

Eventually he was transferred to the Royal Childrens as it was suspected he had a twisted bowel and required surgery. After many tests, that was ruled out and he was finally diagnosed with severe reflux, a UTI and a bad case of the rota virus. Treatment began in earnest and we finally brought him home 8 weeks after he was born. He has had a slight kidney dilatation and unusual thyroid levels, but thank goodness they have all resolved themselves as he has grown and he doesn’t need to see a pediatrician anymore either. Taj’s reflux was a bit of a problem and he was on medication for that, thankfully it looks like he is growing out of that too and we’re gearing up to start the fun adventure of solids in the next month. Developmentally he is spot on for his corrected age and doing everything as he should, he’ll be 8 months actual (6 months corrected) when we start him on solids which seems to be a bit later than a lot of parents, but that’s just me putting unnecessary pressure on myself and Taj and I’d rather wait until he’s totally ready, before long he’ll be eating us out of house and home! Just kidding.

Advice From Parents: As hard as it might seem to do, don’t neglect yourself or each other and your relationship. It’s so easy for the hours, days, weeks to slip by, but we soon learnt its so important to get out and be yourselves and (believe it or not) have some fun. You’ll feel as guilty as heck the first time and probably check your mobile every five minutes, but remember that your precious little angel/s are in the best place and the best hands and I can’t stress enough how important it is to take care of yourselves mentally and physically.

Premature Babies Name: Briella Faith
Gestation Born: 32 + 5 days
Weight When Born: 2020 grams
Length When Born: 42cms
Current Age: 5 Months
Current Weight Now: 7kgs
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: Our eyes certainly open up when you have a premmie bub and you’ll never take the small things for granted. My husband and i where told a week after Briella was born she had grade 3 bleeds on both side of her ventricles. We where also told it’s turned into hydrocephalous (Fluid on the brain). We where devastated and where told that Briella may have brain damage and we just have to wait and see what happens. They doctors told us that the fluid may resolve it self and if it didn’t we would need surgery to release the pressure of her brain. Briella is now 5 months old and 3 months correct and a month ago she has surgery to release the pressure. She is now a very healthy and happy little girl and bring me so much happiness everyday. The future for our family looks very bright and Briella continues to amaze us everyday.

Advice From Parents: A nurse once said to me “God only gives you what you can handle” and i think that is so true…..

Weight When Born: 1590 grams

Advice From Parents: Take every day as it comes and try not to stress out. Your baby can feel that. Be as nurturing as you can, hold your baby (if you’re allowed to) as much as you can, do the kangaroo care. If you’re planning on breastfeeding, keep at the expressing!! it really helps!!!

Weight When Born: 1905 grams
Length When Born: 42cms
Current Age: 11 weeks (3weeks corrected)
Current Weight Now: 3510gms
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: Lillith was born in our local rural referal hospital. We where faced with a possible transfer to a larger more specialised hospital in the city how ever Lillith was born pink and cring, her apgar scores where 7 and 8. She was on C pap for around 3 hours then was in head box oxygene for 12 hours and in room are with in 48 hours of birth allowing her to stay in our local SCN.

The first few days where touch and go but she proved to be a little fighter. As well as dealing with the common premmie braddys and destats, At around day 20 Lillith contrated an infection and crashed fast and we where once again face with the possability of a transfer. She recovered in around 7 days again allowing her to stay but it did set back her transition from NGT feeds to breast feeding. She was fully suck feeding at 6 weeks (actuall age) and we finally went home! Lillith is now a normal bright little bub doing all the right things! She has taken to the breast beautifully and putting on weight like a little champ!

Advice From Parents: Ask ask ask ask ask!!!! I knew nothing about premmies before Lillith decided to come early! Ask as many questions as you need to no question is to small or stupid. The SCN or NICU nurses are great people and are genrally very happy to help you and answer as many questions as you would like. Also get involved do bubs cares change there bedding it will make you feel more like a parent then a visitor! But most of all have hope try not to let it get you down to much its a hard situation but i found a bright out look helped me get through the day!

Failure to pass maconium – inability to poop caused sever stomach distention.
Weight loss – due to stomach issues got down to 1395.
ASD/PFO (hole in the heart) – this causes cyanosis (blue appearance) and poor circulation as well as low oxygen levers. Still being managed through melb.
Bacterial meningitis – Iris contracted bacterial meningitis and sepsis but recovered quickly after a 3 week corse of antis.

Our poor baby girl had a bit of a rough start and Riss was in hospital for 11 and a half weeks but is doing really well now and getting bigger every day! Although some of her issues will be ongoing we are just thankful to have her with us.

Advice From Parents: Keep your chin up! No matter how bad things look, if you have a positive attitude the whole experience will be allot easier. Dont be afraid to ask for help if you aren’t coping. There are loads of services in place for the parents prem and sick baby.
