Premmie Babies Name: Zac
Gestation Born: 28 weeks (to the day)
Weight When Born: 1250 grams
Length When Born: 37.5cm
Current Age: 44 months
Current Weight Now: 14.5kg
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: Zac has no ongoing health issues as such. He has a habit of toe-walking. It was recently diagnosed as being Idiopathic (no physical cause), and the suggestion is that when he started to walk he didn’t like the neurological feedback/ sensation of his flat foot touching the ground. We are currently trying to break his habit through physio and exercises in the form of games. The specialists tell us he will one day grow out of it as he will become too heavy to walk on his toes.

Advice From Parents: Do as much skin-to-skin contact (kangaroo care) as you can – both mum and dad! Apart from bonding, research shows that this aids your baby in SO many physical ways. And it’s great for parents too. When your premmie is in an isolette it can be so daunting to touch them. Skin-to-skin is a fabulous way of removing all physical, psychological and emotional barriers. If you have to push the staff of your hospital to have this contact: DO SO. Get them to look up the benefits and findings of the numerous studies on the internet for themselves.

Premmie Babies Name: Madeline
Gestation Born: 28 weeks
Weight When Born: 940 grams
Length When Born: 34 cm
Current Age: 15 months, 1 year corrected
Current Weight Now: 9.4 kg
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: Maddie is doing so well. Apart from a bit of eczema and ongoing monitoring of her head size (it’ quite large and she had bleeds at birth). She’s doing so well. She was an early walker and is now running and is talking up a storm. We would never have imagined we would be where we are a year and a bit ago when she was born. She’s just doing so well!

Advice From Parents: One day at a time! Remember not to get overwhelmed and to pace yourself. It’s a long journey for everyone and your little one will need you. Get involved however you can even if it’s just by talking to them in the early days. We read and talked to Maddie whenever we could I an truly believe it helped her get to know us. She had her first ‘kangaroo care’ at 8 days old.My husband was great because he brought humor to a tough situation. I found this helped me and Maddie as laughter would sometimes just make a tough situation more manageable.

Premmie Babies Name: Isla May
Gestation Born: 28 weeks
Weight When Born: 750 grams
Length When Born: 33cms
Current Age: 20 weeks
Current Weight Now: 3.9kg
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: Isla has been very lucky. She was able to come off ventilation a few hours after she was born and had no problems during her 70 day stay in hospital. On discharge her doctor discovered an inguinal hernia which she has had repaired and she has suffered from reflux and oral aversion at home so still receives top ups through the nasogastric tube. Hopefully she will be fully breastfed soon and we will be able to take the tube out. So far no ongoing issues have been detected – eye and hearing exams are normal – and hopefully it remains this way!

Advice From Parents: Look after yourself first, then you will be able to properly care for your baby.

Premmie Babies Name: Jade Savannah
Gestation Born: 28+1
Weight When Born: 725g
Length When Born: 32cm
Current Age: 8.5 months actual (5.5 corrected)
Current Weight Now: 6kg
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: Jade was very small for gestation. She had IGUR due to my pre eclampsia and HELLP syndrome going undiagnosed. She was very lucky in the NICU I think she had her fight to stay alive while she was still in my tummy! She was on CPAP for 1.5 weeks. She had 3 blood transfusions and came home at 37+2 weighing 1820g.
She has thrived since coming home. She has glue ear which the docs are monitoring and she is presently slightly behind with her milestones but she will get there in her own time!

Advice From Parents: Don’t feel bad if you can’t be at the hospital ALL the time. You need time for you. It is completely exhausting travelling to and from the hospital every day. Take a long bath or get a takeaway. You need to be strong and healthy to take care of your baby when they come home 🙂

Premmie Babies Name: Emily Merryn
Gestation Born: 28 weeks 6 days
Weight When Born: 1.1 kg
Length When Born: 28 cms
Current Age: 21 months ( 18 corrected)
Current Weight Now: 10kgs
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: Our beautiful miracle was concieved after a long battle and we had an even longer battle to make it to 28 weeks. She was born at 28 weeks due to PROM and Chorioamnionitis. She amazed all the doctors by breathing on her own when she was born and then only needed CPAP for 9 days. She has only had a small amount of reflux to deal with and other than a slight speech delay she is thriving.
Advice From Parents: Look after yourself and your partner. Never take No for an answer. If you think something is not right speak up. We did and it was the best thing we ever did. It’s not easy but it is so rewarding with every little milestone they make forwards.

Premature Babies Name: Sophie
Gestation Born: 28 weeks
Weight When Born: 840 grams
Length When Born: 32cms
Current Age: 19wks
Current Weight Now: 3.6kilos
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: Sophie was born small for her age but had a reasonably smooth ride whilst in hospital. she was ventilated for a day then on and off CPAP for about 8 weeks. She took a long time to learn to suck and i got mastitis and a staf infection which stopped me brest feeding for a few weeks then she never got back on. She had 2 blood transfusions whilst in hospital which scared me at first but she picked up so well after them. At this stage she has no ongoing issues besides being very windy and suffering a little bit of reflux.

Advice From Parents: Keep the first photo ever taken with you so when you or your baby is having a bad day you can look at it and see how far you have come already. although it feels like it, you won’t be in the hospital forever.

Premature Babies Name: Indie Nicole
Gestation Born: 28+5 weeks
Weight When Born: 1320 grams
Length When Born: 38cm
Current Age: 8 months
Current Weight Now:
7.5kgs
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues:
Having a baby at 28 weeks was definately not part of our birth plan! But we are lucky enough to now have a healthy little girl who is continuing to develop and grow beautifully. Indie is a little bit behind other children her age (which is to be expected) although everyday she shows us how determined she is to close the gap between her and other full temr babies! Premmie’s are definately a special kind of human being! The determination of such tiny people is so inspiring and i’m proud to be a parent of a premmie! Indie has some minor lung issues especially in winter and is treated with daily use of ventolin

Advice From Parents: A good friend who had also experienced a premature baby told me to keep thinking about the first birthday! The colour of the balloons..the food all of it! And remember, this is just a stage! A few months from now it will all be a distant memory!

Premature Babies Name: Samuel Scott
Gestation Born: 28 weeks
Weight When Born: 1410 grams
Length When Born: unknown
Current Age: 9 months
Current Weight Now: 8.8kgs
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: Samuel has been blessed with the most outstanding medical care and as a direct result his health is fantastic. Samuel suffered no brain bleeds, the hole in his heart repaired itself, the fluid around his testes also repaired itself, he has passed all his eye tests and all checks so far are completely clear. Samuel was so stressed as a result of his premature birth it was three weeks before I held him and in fact another two before I was able to cuddle him as he did not like being touched. He cried with any form of touch whether it be a nappy change or a bath. In fact bathing was so stressful for both the staff and myself it was suggested we only do it every three to four days as he would hold his breath and go blue. When Sam came home he hated the car, feeding, his cot and just about any other life experience. Now we have a wonderfully happy little man who loves his car rides, his so loved by all his siblings (all seven of them), just started swimming lessons which he also loves. Samuel has a little playgroup of friends which he loves to play with. In such a short while he has come so far.

Advice From Parents: In the beginning we were told by the wonderful hospital staff who became like family to live day by day. I have to admit having a large family of all different ages, life for us was so planned and structured, that letting go of that control was incredibly difficult. We learnt to enjoy and seek comfort from the smallest of Samuel’s improvements. Going from being fed solely by supplements to taking breast milk in a feeding tube even though it was one ml at a time four times a day. Just knowing that he needed that milk helped to comfort the fact I could not put him to the breast. Feeding him through the tube became just like breast feeding my other Children.

Sometimes you take two steps forward and one back but that is okay!!! We would get to three mls per feed and then Samuel couldn’t tolerate the milk so we would have to completely withdraw the feeds and start again in a couple of days. But it was okay he eventually made it to four the five mls and with a fortnight was up to over 15mls per feed. I know at the time you are to frightened to think to far ahead but that is okay. I was scared to make friends with the other Mums who I would see throughout the day for fear of the emotional trauma if someone lost their baby and how I would cope with that. I never once thought I would lose Sam…In the end I made the most wonderful group of friends who we cried tears of joy as each others baby reached a milestone or achieved an extra ml in a fed or even graduated through the intensive care rooms and eventually we all graduated to special care.

When the last of our friends made it to Special care it was like we were all reunited. The comfort these girls gave I could never express into words how much I appreciated the company. We would walk back to Ronald McDonald house together, share a coffee while the doctors were doing rounds and we had to leave our babies. Here we are now nine months later with a not so little almost 9kg baby who the clinic says is doing 80% of what a normal nine month old should be doing although Sam’s corrected age is only 6mths. All our friends little ones, although each has developed at their own pace, some have had some hurdles climb, others are still nothing short of amazing, are all still little miracles in their own way. My wish for you if you are going through this is stay positive, love each day with your little one, care for them even in the smallest of ways as it helps you bond but don’t fear they may look fragile but they really are little fighters. Time does go by so quickly and before you know it that tiny little person has grown before you eyes into a wonderful little person. Try to bond with other parents and support each other as the outside world really does not know there is this whole different world being lived in the Hospital. I also when I felt a little flat would read all the positive stories that are on the wall around the unit of other little ones some made it, some didn’t but each parent regardless of the outcome was so positive and it felt they from their own experiences were reaching out to us who were going through at the time…I hope and pray that if you are reading this I can offer you some comfort and that in turn when you have the happy ending you can then go and help another family…

Premature Babies Name: Amber
Gestation Born: 28 weeks
Weight When Born: 569 grams
Length When Born: n/a
Current Age: 6yrs 3mths
Current Weight Now: 24kg
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: Amber was born at 28 weeks gestation via emergency c-section due to pre-eclampsia, she was not being nourished for over 4 weeks before it was noticed 🙁 Amber was born breathing, and apart from a little jaundice had no probs in hospital, growing up she suffered from a low immune system which naturally let her pick up every bug going around and which made her asthma flare up, but in saying this many full term babies suffer the same. Amber has asthma (but her father suffers from chronic asthma also). All in all Amber is a normal kid, no problems learning, hearing, speaking etc. I consider myself very lucky to have my miracle baby.

Advice From Parents: I think from the time she was born i never once thought she wasn’t going to survive or there would be any problems, i don’t know if this was adrenaline taking over or a case of  “ignorance is bliss” but i stayed positive and everything went smoothly 🙂

Premature Babies Name: Kyah
Gestation Born: 28 weeks
Weight When Born: 750 grams
Length When Born: 33 cm
Current Age: 8 months (5 months corrected)
Current Weight Now: 4.5kg
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: We are very lucky there is nothing really wrong with Kyah even though she was on every breathing apparatis that the hospital had! Came off oxygen about 2 weeks before we came home…10 days before her due date and she was only 1840gms. We had 2 blood transfusions which were the best thing for her as it brought the colour back to her so quickly! Now it is all about her growing because she is still below the 3rd percentile of growth.

Advice From Parents: Take everyday 1 day at a time! Ask questions if you want to know something..the nurses are more than happy to answer anything after all it is YOUR baby and try and get involved in everything from cares to cuddles. And just remember there is a light at the end of the tunnel even if you dont see it yet! There is nothing you can do to changed what has happened so go with the flow and learn to have time for youself because once they come home you can’t send them back lol!!

Premature Babies Name: Nicholas
Gestation Born: 28 weeks
Weight When Born: 1224grams
Length When Born: 40cm
Current Age: 5yrs 11months
Current Weight Now: 20kgs
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: Nicholas was a bit of a naughty boy because he stopped breathing all the time , spent 3 months in hospital, he too caught every bug around had asthma , but since he has turned 5 he has been well and not having to go to the doctors every week , he has a bit of trouble learning but is slowly picking it up and loves school.

Advice From Parents: Have lots of kangaroo cuddles, it is a very hard road but there is always someone worse off than yourself. It is the most hardest thing any family has to go thru especially if you have other children that feel left out as you are never home but it can also bring you closer together.hang in there its worth it when you get them home leaving them in hospital for the first time is really hard but they are in the best hands.

Premature Babies Name: Xavier
Gestation Born: 28 weeks
Weight When Born: 1326 grams
Length When Born: 39 cm
Current Age: 8.5 mths 5.5 corrected
Current Weight Now: 8kg
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: Xavier when born was a healthy weight and only needed CPAP for 2 weeks. We took him home at 8 weeks old, still 4 weeks from his due date. Had not fully established breastfeeding and tried for 3 weeks at home but in the end Xavier was happier on the bottle. He has had 3 ear infections, 4 colds and 1 throat infection. Hearing tests soon but other than that health wise he is good. Lactose intolerant, but that’s easy to manage.

Advice From Parents: I know it’s tough but try enjoy every day. Don’t let anyone pressure you about breastfeeding…. At the end of the day bub doesn’t care weather it’s breast or bottle milk so long as he/she is loved by you. Write a short diary entry so those tough days at home later you can read how much you went through and how your bub is lucky to be here.

Premmies Name: Scarlett

Length When Born: 32cm
Current Age: 10 months

Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: Scarlett was a fighter from the start. She is now sitting up and can stand up whilst holding onto things. She had a bleed on the brain in he first few weeks but this has caused her no problems. She is tiny but amazing!

Advice From Parents: Keep strong but don’t forget to talk about how you’re feeling!

Premmies Name: Max Oliver
Gestation Born: 28+1
Weight When Born: 1225kg
Length When Born: 38cms
Current Age: 9 years 10 months
Current Weight Now:
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: Max was born with ‘chronic lung disease’ and other health issues. Max had 5 operations during his 4 months stay at Princess Margaret Hospital when born.

Max is now coming up to second figures (10 years old) and another stage in his life, we have been blessed with a young man who has a very loving personality. He is sensitive and caring and loves little children and animals.

Although Max has developmental delays both academically and socially he is a truly gorgeous little man and we all love him dearly and feel blessed every day.

Advice From Parents: Whilst pregnant with Max I was advised, almost daily, during the 10 week stay in hospital prior to Max’s birth, to terminate the pregnancy as our baby had less than 5% chance of survival.

Despite this advice I was determined to give our little man every chance. I am happy to say that Max proved everybody wrong…..he was and still is a fighter.

My advise as a Mum of a special little person, is to trust your own instincts. Ask lots of questions, never fear of repeating the same questions over and over again, until you understand.

All the specialists and nurses we have met on our journey have been fantastic…. thank you so very much x

Premmies Name: Vincent
Gestation Born: 28+1wks
Weight When Born: 398 grams
Length When Born: 28cm
Current Age: 50+4wks actual/10+4wks corrected
Current Weight Now: 4180 grams
Babies Outlook/Ongoing Issues: We are very lucky to have our son so coming home on oxygen and a NG tube was not taunting at all. Like our NICU journey we are taking each day as it comes when it comes to what Vincent will have to face in the near future. He still has catch up growth to do and his lungs to keep maturing. To have only small issues has been amazing.

Advice From Parents: My best advice I can give is to take one day at a time. You will have your down days and that’s ok. Mourn when you are down and celebrate when you are up. Even the most simplest of an achievement is a massive milestone for these special little people. Trust in your love and always have hope.
