Katia DeSantis is the 2nd Runner Up of our 2013 Premmie Hero Volunteer Awards.
Since the early arrival of her son, Dante who was born at 29 weeks, Katia wanted to find a way to give back so as a professional photographer, her selflessness has lead her to creating memories for families who are travelling a similar path whilst raising awareness of premature birth and raising funds to further support the community.
Katia voluntarily visits various hospitals in Melbourne and captures professional photographs of premature babies in NICU, giving families something special to remember to commemorate the birth of their tiny newborn. The experience of giving birth prematurely is a rollercoaster and from what can be a very stressful and heart breaking experience, Katia takes beautiful pictures which for their parents, capture the raw emotion and the amazing life that has been gifted to them. Katia volunteers her time, dedication, professionalism and provides all the images from each hospital photo session on a disc and given to each family all at no cost. Katia’s vision continues long after the NICU by providing a follow up shoot capturing each baby’s milestones and giving the families discounted photography with the option of a portion of their session going directly to a premmie charity of their choice.
Each time Katia walks through the NICU doors, as a mum herself having experienced the rollercoaster, many memories come flooding back of when her son Dante was born, this is one thing that gives her strength to continue making a difference. She provides memories not only for the families but in many years to come; each baby will be able to look back and see how far they have come and how hard they fought to overcome their many obstacles.
Katia has a vision and through her generosity, she is bringing light and memories into the lives of families throughout the premmie community.
You can follow her blog on www.tinyd.com.au where she provides updates and progress on Dante, providing hope to families and she also shares the story of each baby she meets and photographs to give families hope along their journey.
Congratulations to Katia and thank you!
